"Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often associated primarily with childhood, but many patients carry its symptoms into adulthood and this can have a profound impact on their daily lives. The aim of the new program is to help these people better manage their difficulties and improve their quality of life," said Beroun psychiatrist Tereza Petrásková, M.D., Ph.D., who introduced the new program to the audience and provided professional support for the symposium.
Among the speakers were top experts in the field of psychiatry and psychology. For example, renowned child and adolescent psychiatrist doc. Michal Goetz, M.D., Ph.D., who focused on the topic of ADHD in adolescence or the leading psychologist of the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation Mgr. Veronika Lechovská. The latter explained the role of the psychologist in the Programme for the Diagnosis and Treatment of ADHD and Other Attention Deficit Disorders.
Pavel Mohr, M.D., Ph.D., a prominent psychiatrist and deputy director of the National Institute for Mental Health, elaborated on the issue of ADHD in adults. At the same time, I also presented some case studies, which I tried to present typical symptoms and how they interfere with the everyday life and functioning of our patients. I am very pleased that awareness of this syndrome is increasing, not only among the general public but also among professionals. More people are now thinking that even a person with atypical symptoms can suffer from ADHD. I also mentioned the introduction of a new effective stimulant for this therapy on the Czech market, which we very much welcome."
Other speakers were neurologist David Pánek, M.D., Ph.D., who described the possibilities of diagnosing movement behaviour in patients with attention deficit disorder, and Prof. Ján Praško Pavlov, M.D., Csc., who discussed the topic of group cognitive-behavioural therapy with adult ADHD patients.
The symposium at the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation in Beroun was also attended by the well-known Czech psychologist and adictologist Mgr. Aleš Kuda. The main reason for his visit is the fact that ADHD syndrome and the development of addictions are interconnected. That addiction and ADHD go hand in hand, which was also mentioned in one of the lectures. I consider this topic to be very necessary and therefore I was very happy to attend your symposium."
The symposium also included practical workshops on techniques for managing ADHD symptoms and a tour of the Mental Rehabilitation Center.
Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital and its Mental Rehabilitation Centre have long been dedicated to innovative approaches in the field of psychiatry and psychology. The new program for the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD and other attention disorders represents another step towards providing specialized and effective care to patients with this diagnosis.
