Frequently asked questions

General

We opened on 20 June 2023. What does that mean?

As it is a large and complex project, the Mental Rehabilitation Centre is running in stages. Therefore, we cannot provide all types of care right from the start. We will continue to keep you informed about the launch of each service through our website.

I have seen the trailer on TV and I would be like to be treated by you.

We appreciate your interest. We want to be a facility that provides quality care for all patients with mental illness. Watch our website where we continually add updates and information about our current and planned care. You can already check out the Our Vision of Care section for more information about how we treat and what you can solve with us. At this time you can fill out an order form and we will get back to you. Current waiting times for admission to the treatment programme are in the higher units of months.

Will you be treating children?

Services for child psychiatric patients will not start until late 2024/2025. We are planning services for patients aged 15 to 18. For now, please keep an eye on our website where we will be adding updates for those interested in our services. We are launching the Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre gradually and our website will be the place to get the information you need quickly. You can already check out the Our Vision of Care section where we have information on how we treat, what you can resolve with us and other information including FAQs.

I have an urgent problem, can you help me now?

Acute services (both inpatient and outpatient) are already partially up and running. These are urgent care inpatient wards C and D and psychotherapy ward B. The plan is to open psychotherapy ward A. The Centre for Mental Rehabilitation (CDR) is being launched gradually. So keep an eye on our website, where we keep posting updates on its operation. At the moment, we only treat patients with appointments in our outpatient clinics.

How does it work for you?

We are a qualified psychiatric unit based on high staff expertise, providing care to all without distinction. We work in a well-equipped and modern environment, within which we have made a commitment to be as inclusive a facility as possible, through which we provide innovative treatment with a personalised approach. For a description of our individual services, please see Our Vision of Care and Departments and Outpatient Clinics.

What therapies do you provide?

The cornerstone is group psychotherapy. However, our aim is to provide as wide a range of complementary therapies as possible, mainly including movement and creative therapies. Examples include drama therapy, music therapy, art therapy, virtual reality therapy, and chronobiological therapy. It also includes the use of the most modern neurostimulation methods. For more information about care, please see Our Vision of Care and Departments and Outpatient Clinics.

Is care accessible to all?

Yes, most of the care is covered by public health insurance and is provided to patients from all over the Czech Republic. However, our offer also includes the possibility of using extra services, which clients can enjoy for a fee beyond the usual care provided, within the Altoa premium programme.

Are your services covered by health insurance?

Yes, we aim to ensure that the maximum amount of care we provide is covered by public health insurance for all those who need it. If desired, we also offer individualized care through the Altoa premium program, in which, of course, the client's anonymity is fully respected.

I don't have health insurance, can I be treated by you?

Yes, we are able to care for clients without public health insurance, with clients paying for it themselves. Our service rates are standard and therefore comparable to rates at other facilities. For information on prices for self-pay procedures, please contact the Mental Rehabilitation Center directly.

How do I make an appointment?

Through the online order form on our website. We will not meet your request immediately, but will put you on a waiting list. We will contact you with an appointment offer when a space becomes available.

What happens after I fill in the order form?

Once you have completed and submitted the form, we will register your request and then send you information about your placement on the waiting list within three days. Requests on the waiting list are then attended to by the health care professional responsible for each care programme.

How long after filling out the order form will it take to get an appointment?

We are continually monitoring your request and will get back to you when we have an offer of the earliest possible indication appointment for you. Currently, waiting times for admission to care are in the higher units of months.

I would like to complete an appointment form but do not currently have a referral from the doctor. Should I wait for it and fill out the order form afterwards?

If you will have the request form in the near future (for example, within a month), it is certainly worth waiting for it, as it will greatly help us to understand your problem better. This will probably give you an earlier appointment.

Can I make an appointment by phone?

We prefer to fill in the order form. This way, your request will be put on the waiting list immediately and we can work with it faster and more efficiently.

Can I make separate appointments for some specific therapies?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. However, once you are in our care, all therapies are individually tailored to the client's needs. This means that if you are interested in a specific procedure, it can be discussed with the treating physician.

How long is the waiting time for an appointment with you?

It depends on the type of examination. Currently, the average waiting time for outpatient care and hospitalisation is in the higher units of months.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

You do not necessarily need a doctor's recommendation to make an appointment. However, if you provide one, we can better understand your needs, better plan your entry into care, and generally speed up the appointment process.

I saw a specific psychiatrist in the trailer and want to make an appointment.

We do not normally provide the option to make an appointment with a specific doctor for an examination. However, you can book this service as part of Altoa's individual care programme.

How do I get in touch with a doctor?

A specific doctor can be reached by calling the reception. We will carefully pass on the information and reason for contact to the doctor concerned, who will get back to you as soon as possible.

Why should I be treated by you?

Because we are the most advanced facility in the Czech Republic that cares for patients with mental illness.

I have a mental health problem, can you help me?

We are a medical facility that strives to provide services for clients with mental health issues, so we want to help you too. Please keep an eye on our website, which will always be the first place we post updates on the center's operations. You can already check out the Our Vision of Care section for information on how we treat, what you can resolve with us, and much more.

A relative of mine has an addiction problem. Can you help him?

First of all, it is necessary for your loved one to show interest in treatment himself. This means that he or she must come in person for evaluation and treatment. This is because compulsive addiction treatment is definitely not as effective and also depends on the severity of his or her problems. In any case, we already provide at least initial help in acute psychiatric services.

I suffer from psychosomatic difficulties. Can I make an appointment?

Of course you can. Psychosomatic problems are one of the most frequently treated problems in psychiatry. At the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation, quality psychotherapy is the focus of care for these difficulties and is the cornerstone of our department. You will be cared for by professionals who have extensive experience in this field.

I have tinnitus and have heard of rTMS therapy. Can I make an appointment for this therapy?

Neurostimulation therapy programs and inpatient services are still in development. As soon as they are available, we will post information about their launch well in advance on our website.

I am being treated for depression and am taking the following medications. Can you give me some advice?

We are not able to give you proper advice in the online questionnaire or counselling service. Mental illness should always be dealt with comprehensively by seeing a doctor in person.

I am being treated for a particular problem, I am in another facility and I want to come to you. What can I do?

We do not plan to operate a traditional psychiatric outpatient clinic where the patient has been under our care for years. Our goal is to provide acute and specialized care. You will be able to contact us for acute difficulties from September 2023. We will place you on specialist programmes after an assessment in the referral clinic, to which you will be invited after completing an order form on the website, which will be available from 26 June 2023.

I'm having suicidal thoughts, what should I do?

If you find yourself in such a difficult situation, be sure to use the crisis lines listed at the foot of our website. Currently, we only provide medical care through our acute care clinic to patients with a prior appointment.

My child has mental health problems but we live 400 km away, can I come? If I drive that far, will you treat him? And if it's for hospitalization, will you admit him?

At the moment we can't admit patients to the emergency room without an appointment. As soon as this service is available again, we will publish information about its launch well in advance on our website.

From what age do you provide care?

We now provide services to clients over the age of 18. However, our goal is to provide psychiatric care to younger people as well. At this time, we run an Adolescent Inpatient Unit for clients between the ages of 14 and 18, which offers a comprehensive therapeutic program.

Can I get a prescription?

We only provide psychiatric care services, including prescription services, to patients who are being treated by us.

What are the room rates and how much do your services cost?

Stay in acute inpatient care rooms is covered by health insurance companies. However, we are gradually introducing rooms with a higher standard, including suites, which can accommodate, for example, family members of hospitalized clients. These hotel-type services are paid for directly by the clients. At the same time, services that are not covered by health insurance companies are also available for direct payment. These include, for example, various wellness programmes as well as individualised and special therapeutic programmes. In this context, keep an eye on the website for information about the premium care offered by Altoa.

How can I contact you?

You can find ways to contact us on our website in the Contacts section. However, the preferred way is to let us know about you via our online questionnaire. If you are interested in receiving treatment from us, please use the order form to help plan the whole process of entering care better and therefore speed up the process.

How do I reach you?

We are located on the premises of the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun. To reach us by car, follow the directions at the bottom of the homepage. The city of Beroun is well connected to the local public transport system as well as the extended Prague Integrated Transport (PiD). So it is easy to reach us by train or bus.

Can I park here?

Do you also provide care for the blind?

Outpatient care

What are the office hours for outpatient clinics?

The office hours for the outpatient clinics are Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The reception can be reached on the same days between 7:30am and 4:00pm. However, the aim is to gradually extend the opening hours to 24 hours. We will keep you informed about the various steps on our website.

How is your outpatient care?

We focus mainly on acute care. This means that the outpatient care of the Mental Rehabilitation Center functions primarily as support for emergencies related to mental illness. And it also serves to refer patients to inpatient care and to participate in residential treatment.

When will the urgent outpatient clinic be open?

We plan to launch the urgent outpatient clinic in autumn 2024.

When will the emergency room be operational?

At the moment the emergency room is running, but only for the needs of the ambulance service.

What is the difference between an urgent ambulance and an emergency room?

An urgent admission is a service where a client may come because of a sudden deterioration in their mental health. An emergency admission is used to deal with acute mental health problems, including the most serious ones, with the assistance of the ambulance service.

What is an indication for an assessment?

An indication examination is a one-time assessment of your condition in our outpatient clinic that precedes your placement in all treatment programs at the Mental Rehabilitation Center. It is a routine psychiatric evaluation where we ask about your medical history, current difficulties and treatment experience. At this visit, you will also learn from the psychiatrist whether the program is appropriate for you and when you will enter it.

Inpatient care

How long is the wait for hospital admission?

The waiting time for hospitalisation depends mainly on the current availability of the Centre and the needs of the clients. Currently, it is in the higher units of months.

What is the length of hospitalization?

The length of hospitalization is adjusted individually according to the needs of the client. It is fixed in structured therapy programmes. In the case of acute hospitalizations, the length is adapted to the patient's condition. At the moment, in acute psychiatry, hospitalization lasts an average of 16 days; it can, of course, be shorter or longer.

What do I have to do to be admitted?

Since the opening of the Mental Rehabilitation Center, we have been working to be more accessible than other psychiatric facilities. The easiest way to do this is by filling out an order form on our website, which will help make the entire process of entering treatment easier to plan and, as a result, faster. We will not meet your requests immediately, but will put you on a waiting list and contact you when we can get you into care.

Do I need a doctor's referral when I come in for inpatient care?

Yes, a referral from a doctor or our outpatient clinic is required for admission to hospital. With your consent, your attending physician or psychiatrist can also make an appointment for hospitalization via the online order form, and may include a referral.

Which health insurance companies does the Centre have a contract with?

Our facility has a contractual relationship with all health insurance companies.

What can I take with me to the hospital?

It is advisable to bring proof of identity, your health insurance card, a small amount of money or a credit card and any medication you are taking with you to the hospital. You will also need personal hygiene items (toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, cream, hair shampoo, comb), underwear, socks, comfortable clothes for daily wear, slippers, clothes for sports activities, swimwear, pyjamas and a towel. Men should not forget shaving equipment, and women should remember sanitary towels and tampons. If you wear or use any of the following, be sure to remember your glasses, dentures, hearing aids or walking stick. If you want, you can also bring a mobile phone, tablet, book reader or laptop. However, their use during your hospital stay is subject to the department's rules.

What can't I bring with me to hospital?

It is not permissible to take any firearms, cold or hand weapons (knives, axes, machetes, telescopic batons, etc.) to the hospital. Pepper spray and various types of stun guns. It is also forbidden to bring alcohol, cigarettes, drugs and other addictive substances. You cannot bring or bring your own animal, except for assistance and guide dogs.

Can I have visitors on the ward during my hospital stay?

Yes, ward visits are allowed. The time of visits is adapted to the ward's regime.

What do I have to do to get my loved one admitted?

Contact the person's GP or outpatient psychiatrist and tell them the reasons why you think your loved one's admission to hospital is necessary. The physician may then recommend hospitalization. If your loved one's condition is acute and their behaviour and actions put themselves or others at risk, call 155.

How are meals provided?

According to the doctor's recommendation, the patient is prescribed a diet, possibly special nutritional supplements or preparations. Patients, accompanied by staff, go to the common dining room three times a day, if their clinical condition allows it. Otherwise, acute patients have food delivered three times a day directly to the ward.

Can I drive and park on the hospital grounds?

Patients and their families can use the large parking lot in front of the entrance to the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun.

Can I be hospitalized with my dog?

Patients can only be hospitalized with a guide or assistance dog. These dogs must be properly identified and you must have a valid statement of their role or purpose.

Do you provide spa care?

No, spa care is usually provided in spa homes and this type of care has a different structure and course. Our care is mainly general psychiatric and specialised psychotherapeutic. However, it will certainly be rewarding for us if you leave the Mental Rehabilitation Centre feeling as refreshed as after a spa stay.

How do the visits work?

Visits take place according to the individual ward schedules, ideally outside of the rich therapeutic programme. We try to limit them as little as possible, so they are allowed throughout the day, except for the night-time lull, which occurs after 8pm.

What is the process of admission to care?

Admission is specific to each care component. Generally speaking, however, a client is admitted to a planned hospital admission, inpatient or therapeutic inpatient programme after an assessment in the referral clinic. You will be booked into the indication clinic by completing and submitting an online order form. The doctor in the outpatient clinic will then assess the condition and recommend the appropriate form of care.

Do you provide long-term inpatient care, i.e., more than 60 days?

We are a primarily urgent care facility with specialized therapeutic programs. This means that we do not provide long-term care that is consistent with the aftercare nature of psychiatric hospitals.

Inpatient care

What is residential care?

Inpatient care is a type of treatment where the client comes to the Mental Health Rehabilitation Center for a therapeutic program at regular intervals and returns home that day after the program is over. The frequency of visits is determined by the client's needs and the treatment plan set up. The main advantage of the residential centre is that the client spends his/her time mainly in the home environment while being in an intensive psychotherapeutic programme.

When will the residential centres be operational?

Patient selection for the first inpatient programmes will start in November 2024. The inpatient program for adolescents is already running.
